Washington DC Area CCRC - Oversight Management - Case Study

Case Study Forest Hills of DC

Overview

Provided interim oversight management through leadership succession at the onset of COVID.

We are grateful to have the team at Long Hill support our organization in most precarious times. Long Hill allowed our board the needed space to make thoughtful, long-term strategic decisions without the added pressure of minding daily operations. Long Hill maintained our operational stability, connected us with needed resources, and positioned our newly hired team for their success.

Isabella Firth Shycoff
Board Chair

The Challenge

The property was a challenged non-profit campus comprised of two locations, failing to meet lender covenants, averaging a census of 50%, and experienced turnover at the CEO/NHA level along with the Director of Nursing. These challenges preceded the occurrence of COVID which arrived in the market later in the engagement. Long Hill initiated a complete review of clinical processes and systems to mitigate infection prevention and control issues and COVID transmission.

How We Helped

Long Hill quickly assessed this property for the Board of Directors and determined the need for stable, focused leadership. Long Hill implemented best practices, trained the on-site team, and managed marketing and sales performance. Long Hill further supported the property by initiating the COVID preparedness policies and procedures.

Our interim management engagement allowed the Board to consider leadership succession and strategic decisions. We were able to transition stable daily operations to the new leadership team at the conclusion of the engagement.

The Results

  • After failing prior-year lender covenants the facility exceeded their next year covenant requirements avoiding a contractually enforced receivership.
  • Soon after our engagement, the property was awarded a Best Nursing Home in Washington DC designation by “US News and World Report”.
  • Specific actions included the establishment of business development systems, processes, and a CRM; creation and implementation of a new website, blogs, e-books.
  • Developed and implemented an advertising campaign, sales training and aided in the hire of a business development facility leadership.
  • Developed, educated, and installed clinical systems and facility processes to better communicate and mitigate infection control exposures. The result was zero COVID deaths for the client during the Long Hill tenure.
  • Right-sized vendor costs.
